Our Lady of Nazaré (chapels)
Original title: Nossa Senhora da Nazaré (Capelas de)
Describes three Madeiran chapels dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Nazaré, in Arco da Calheta, Câmara de Lobos and São Martinho. It gives their founders and dates, and a fishermen's tradition about the lady of the entail at Câmara de Lobos.
There is a chapel of this name in the parish (freguesia) of Arco da Calheta (‘arc of Calheta’), which was the seat of an entailed estate (morgadio) founded by the two sisters Antónia de Cristo and Leonarda do Horto in favour of their nephew Francisco Friz de Barros Maciel. It was he who built the chapel, around the third or last quarter of the 17th century. In 1694 he had the mortal remains of his uncle, Father Inácio Barbosa da Silva, moved there; he was the brother of the founders of the entail and had been one of the owners of the property on which the chapel stood. Having fallen into great ruin, the chapel was rebuilt in 1830 by António João Barbosa de Matos e Câmara, a descendant of the founders.
There is a chapel of the same name in the parish of Câmara de Lobos (‘seals’ den’), founded in 1757 by Maria do Rosário Henriques, widow of Pedro Bernardes Cardeiro. Concerning her, or another owner of this chapel, Dr Álvaro de Azevedo gives the following curious information: ‘It is a tradition among the fishermen of Câmara de Lobos that at the beginning of this century the lady of the entail (morgada) of Nazaré, armed with a small sword, would take up her position on the height where the chapel stands; she would hail the fishing boats as they came into the landing place; and, by privilege or abuse, she would take from them whatever fish she wanted and pay for it as she saw fit.’
There is also, in the parish of São Martinho (‘St Martin’), in the locality (sítio) called Nazaré, a chapel with this dedication, founded by Martim Vaz in the year 1627.
