St Francis (chapels)
Original title: São Francisco (Capelas de)
Notes on three chapels dedicated to St Francis, in Calheta, São Pedro (São Francisco das Furnas) and Santa Luzia.
Ruined and long since withdrawn from worship, the chapel of São Francisco still stands in the parish (freguesia) of Calheta (‘small cove’). It was the small church of the convent of Franciscan friars that once existed there. It belongs to Pedro César de Brito (1921).
In the parish of São Pedro, on the Caminho de Santo António (‘St Anthony’), there stood the chapel of São Francisco, better known as São Francisco das Furnas. It was founded by Canon Pedro Correia Barbosa in 1697. It belonged to the holder of the entail (morgado) Jérvis de Atouguia. In the house adjoining it the Viscount of Atouguia (see that entry) was born on 7 July 1797. Canon Pedro Correia Barbosa is the same man we referred to on page 126 of volume I of this Elucidário.
In 1675 Ambrósio Vieira de Andrade built a chapel dedicated to St Francis in the parish of Santa Luzia (‘St Lucy’).
