São Filipe (fort)

Original title: São Filipe (Forte de)

Former fort of São Filipe in Funchal, probably built under Philippine rule, between the Santa Luzia and João Gomes streams; ceded to the municipal council after an 1896 request.

Map: Madeira (4)

This fort, built, it seems, under Philippine rule (Spanish Habsburg rule over Portugal, 1580–1640), was entered from Largo do Pelourinho (‘pillory square’) and stood between the Ribeira de Santa Luzia (‘St Lucy’) and the Ribeira de João Gomes. It was ceded to the Council following a petition that the Council addressed to the Government on 27 February 1896, which was granted only much later. The large building housing the sugar-cane crushing mill on Largo do Pelourinho stands partly on the ground of the old fort of São Filipe (1921).

Chronology
  • The fort of São Filipe in Funchal was apparently built during Philippine rule.
  • Funchal council petitioned the government for cession of the Forte de São Filipe, granted only much later.
