Manuel de Castro (ramp and bridge of Dom)

Original title: Manuel de Castro (Rampa e ponte de D.)

A Funchal ramp and bridge named after governor D. Manuel de Portugal e Castro (1823–25), who built the bridge and widened the ramp.

Map: Madeira (6)

This thoroughfare takes its name from Dom Manuel de Portugal e Castro, who was governor and captain-general of this archipelago from 1823 to 1825. He had the bridge built and widened a narrow ramp that existed there. It lies between the southern end of Rua Direita (‘straight street’) and Rua 5 de Outubro, opposite the Travessa dos Açougues, which leads to Rua dos Tanoeiros.
