Pedro V (market)
Original title: Pedro V
The Mercado de D. Pedro V in Funchal, built from 1876 with municipal loans and opened on 19 December 1880.
Work on this market began in July 1876. To carry it out, the Council raised four loans: one of 6 contos (one million réis) de réis in 1876; two of 10 contos de réis each, on 19 June and 7 November 1878; and the last of 34 contos de réis, of which only 4 were set aside to pay old wage bills of the same market. The sum of the first of these loans was drawn by the councillors (vereadores), on their own responsibility, from the banking house of João José Rodrigues Leitão.
On the site where the Pedro V Market (Mercado de D. Pedro V) now stands (1921), opened to the public on 19 December 1880, there was once a sawmill for timber, and later a few stalls selling fruit and vegetables. It was Sérvulo Drumond de Meneses, while serving as a councillor in 1853, who first suggested that it would be advisable to have the market built.
