Flor do Oceano (A)
A Flor do Oceano was the title of three successive Funchal newspapers (1828, 1834–1840 and 1860–1867), the second being the first paper published in Madeira after constitutional government was established.
The first issue appeared on 22 June 1828 and the last on 22 August of the same year. Its editors were Dr Manuel Ferreira de Seabra da Mota e Silva, then juiz de fora (crown-appointed judge from outside the district) on this island, Sérvulo Drumond de Meneses (see that entry) and the lawyer Jean de Béthencourt.
Another newspaper appeared under the same title; it was the first to be published here after the establishment of constitutional government. The first issue is dated 9 November 1834 and the last 29 October 1840. The issues were numbered consecutively up to no. 108, of 23 December 1836. In the following years the numbering was annual.
On 1 September 1860 another newspaper was published under the title Flor do Oceano; its last issue, the 353rd, appeared on 31 August 1867.
