Leitão

Note on the Leitão family in Madeira, from a governor under Philip I to a 19th-century Funchal banker.

In the time of Philip I, the high court judge (desembargador) João Leitão came to Madeira. He was captain-major (capitão-mor, commander of the local militia) of War and Governor-General of the archipelago, but we do not know whether the Leitões whom Manuel Tomás, in ‘The Island Epic’ (Insulana), includes among the notable families of Madeira descend from him. Around the middle of the 19th century, the merchant and banker João José Rodrigues Leitão, a native of the mainland, settled in Funchal and founded another branch of the Leitão family. See Cacongo (I-182).
