Herrera (Dom Agostinho)
Original title: Herrera (D. Agostinho)
D. Agostinho Herrera, lord of Fuerteventura and count of Lanzarote, was appointed governor-general of Madeira in 1582 to prepare its defence against the Prior of Crato's fleet.
Lord of Fuerteventura and Count of Lanzarote, he was appointed governor-general of Madeira on 12 November 1582. He came to this archipelago on the special mission of preparing the military defence of the island against the expected invasion by the French fleet which, under the orders of António, Prior of Crato, was attacking Portuguese ships and preparing to assault several ports, as later happened in the archipelago of the Azores. Once the fear of this expected attack had passed, Herrera left Madeira, and João Leitão resumed the post of governor-general (see that entry).
