Hermenegildo Capelo (street)
Original title: Hermenegildo Capelo (Rua)
History of the Funchal street beside the Jardim Municipal, opened in 1814 through the former Franciscan convent grounds and renamed in 1885 after the explorer Hermenegildo Capelo.
The land that now forms the Jardim Municipal (‘municipal garden’), Rua Hermenegildo Capelo and the site of the Teatro Manuel de Arriaga once made up the grounds of the Convent of São Francisco (St Francis of Assisi). Despite the opposition of the Franciscan friars, the street was opened there in 1814 and was given the name Rua dos Frades. In 1823 the market built by order of the city Council (Câmara Municipal) opened to the public on the site later set aside for the theatre, and the adjoining street became known as Rua do Mercado de São João. In 1885, when the explorers Hermenegildo Capelo and Roberto Ivens called at this island (see those entries), the Municipal Council resolved to give their names to the streets bordering the Jardim Municipal on the south and north.
