This public thoroughfare, which links Rua dos Aranhas (today Rua do Dr. Chaves) directly with Largo do Ribeiro Real, was opened a few years ago, when the old alleys known as the cemetery alleys, which lay near the two British cemeteries, were demolished and repaired.

5 June 1834 is the date of the proclamation of constitutional government in Madeira, and the new street was given this name to commemorate that auspicious event.

Chronology
  • The constitutional (liberal) government and Constitutional Charter were proclaimed in Funchal, peacefully in the town though with violence in some parishes, establishing liberal institutions in Madeira.
