Cemitério (alley)

Original title: Cemiterio (Beco do)

Former insanitary alley in Funchal, with adjoining lanes, demolished from 1887 to make way for Rua 5 de Junho, completed in 1892.

Map: Madeira (7)

It stood where Rua 5 de Junho (‘5 June street’) now runs, and had adjoining it the lanes of Violetas, Malvas, Alecrim, Papoilas and Aldeia. Demolition of the hovels in the alley and in the last four of these lanes began in 1887, but the works on Rua 5 de Junho were not completed until 1892. Both the alley and these lanes were mere passageways, lined with small, insanitary and unsightly dwellings.

Chronology
  • Demolition began of the hovels of the Beco do Cemitério and adjoining lanes in Funchal.
