Cintra (Diogo Gomes de)

A fifteenth-century Portuguese navigator whose Latin narrative of his voyages refers to the discovery of the Madeira archipelago.

This 15th-century Portuguese navigator wrote a narrative of his voyages in Latin, and in it he refers to the discovery of the Madeira archipelago. What is said on this subject on p. 905 of ‘Longing for the Homeland’ (Saudades da Terra) is well worth reading. Diogo Gomes’s narrative was translated by Gabriel Pereira and published in the Boletim da Sociedade de Geografia de Lisboa, no. 5 of series 170., covering the years 1898 and 1899.
