Nola (António da)

Short entry on the Genoese navigator António da Nola, who called at Madeira in 1460 according to Diogo Gomes's account of his voyages. Gomes records that Nola stayed on at Madeira and, helped by a better wind, reached Portugal before him.

This Genoese navigator was in Madeira in 1460, according to the account of the voyages of Diogo Gomes. ‘Then,’ says Gomes, ‘we sighted one of the Canary Islands, called Palma, and from there we went to the island of Madeira. As I was anxious to return to Portugal, I set out and was driven by a contrary wind to the Azores, but António de Nola stayed behind in Madeira and, making use of a more favourable wind, reached Portugal before me.’
