Huguenot corsairs attacked the fleet off La Palma in the Canaries and killed the forty Jesuits, led by Inácio de Azevedo, who had passed through Madeira.

A stone commemorates the martyrdom of Inácio de Azevedo and 39 Jesuits off La Palma, which it dates to 15 July 1579 (the martyrdom occurred in 1570).
