Quays on the island of Porto Santo
Original title: Cais na Ilha do Porto Santo
Notes the pier serving Porto Santo and an abandoned 1824 plan for a mole and quay at the Baixas de São Tiago in Funchal.
The neighbouring island of Porto Santo (‘holy harbour’) is today served by a pier, which renders excellent service to the traffic of that port and which we shall discuss later. (See Porto Santo (island).)
In former times there were plans to build a quay in front of the Funchal customs house (Alfândega do Funchal), and in 1824 Brigadier Raposo and Major Sant’Ana came to Madeira to choose a site for the construction of a mole (breakwater) and a quay. The site chosen was the Baixas de São Tiago, but although the considerable sum of 37 contos (1 conto = 1,000,000 réis, from 1911 1,000 escudos) was spent on acquiring and preparing materials for the works, these were never begun.

The Manueline customs house of Funchal, ordered to be built in 1508, with arcades and a courtyard chapel of Santo António built in 1714, now deconsecrated. It was directed by the provedor until 1775 and repaired after the 1748 earthquake. It was surrounded by mutinous troops in 1626 and stormed in 1641, the 1868 riot took place on the beach nearby, and it later housed the Civil Government offices and archive.
- Porto Santo
Island served by a pier-quay.
An island of the archipelago, settled alongside Madeira and forming one of the three captaincies. It has always constituted a single parish, dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Piedade, whose church was repeatedly sacked. The Elucidário records the Moorish pirate raid of 1617, its own Misericórdia and a rainwater channel built on this drought-prone island.
