Quays
Original title: Cais
Introduction to Madeira's twenty-six quays, mostly built or improved by the Junta Geral between 1905 and 1916, which eased coastal landings and inter-parish communication.
There are twenty-six quays (cais) in Madeira, spread along the north and south coasts, almost all of them built or improved by order of the District General Council (Junta Geral) between 1905 and 1916. Thanks to these quays, it is now fairly easy to embark and land at many points on the island. It is much to be wished that others will be built, not only in Madeira but also on Porto Santo (‘holy harbour’), so as to end the inconvenience suffered by those who visit certain parts of the coast of the two islands. These works, although sometimes costly, amply repay the sacrifices they require, because they bring great benefits to the people by easing communications between the various parishes of the archipelago.
The information we give below is a brief account of all that we know about the quays of Madeira.

- Porto Santo
Island where more quays are desired.
An island of the archipelago, settled alongside Madeira and forming one of the three captaincies. It has always constituted a single parish, dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Piedade, whose church was repeatedly sacked. The Elucidário records the Moorish pirate raid of 1617, its own Misericórdia and a rainwater channel built on this drought-prone island.
