Leiria (Júlio Augusto)
Mainland military engineer who directed public works in Funchal district, taught mathematics at the lyceum and published an 1871 map of Madeira.
A military engineer from mainland Portugal who held the posts of director of public works of the district of Funchal and teacher of the first three years of mathematics at our lyceum (state secondary school). In 1871 he published a map of the island of Madeira, to which we have already referred in this Elucidário, and in 1874 he wrote a pamphlet with the following title: Duas palavras de Júlio Augusto Leiria em resposta ao folheto intitulado «O Hospital de Santa Isabel da cidade do Funchal». There is a road in Machico named after the engineer Leiria, since it was owing to this official’s diligent efforts that its construction was begun. He died in Coimbra in January 1878, at about 50 years of age.
