Person poet priest
Manuel Tomás
1585–1665
poet · priest
Poet born in Guimarães who settled in Funchal, probably as a canon of the cathedral, and wrote the epic poem A Insulana (Antwerp, 1635) on the discovery and history of Madeira. He was murdered in 1665; the Elucidário questions the claim that his murder was linked to the ecclesiastical sedition of 1668.
