Cruz do Carvalho (chapel)

Original title: Cruz do Carvalho (Capela da)

A chapel at Cruz do Carvalho built in 1767 by Captain João Francisco de Freitas Esmeraldo; its dedication and identity with a surviving chapel are uncertain.

Map: Madeira (2)

We have found somewhere a reference to a chapel ‘situated at the spot of Cruz do Carvalho (‘oak cross’), so called, on a property named Quintinha (‘little estate’), and built in 1767 by order of Captain João Francisco de Freitas Esmeraldo, professed knight of the Order of Christ (Ordem de Cristo). We do not know what the dedication of this chapel was, nor whether the reference is to the chapel that stands a few dozen metres from Cruz do Carvalho and which today belongs to Luís Vogado de Bettencourt.
