João Francisco de Freitas Esmeraldo

Madeiran merchant and captain, a professed knight of the Order of Christ, who had the Cruz do Carvalho chapel built in 1767. He bought the confiscated Jesuit Quinta Grande estate in 1770 and is credited with issuing the first known tokens in 1793.
