Barbosa (Pedro Correia)
Madeiran canon of Funchal Cathedral, vicar general and governor of the diocese, famed as a preacher, who published a panegyric sermon in 1699 and founded the chapel of São Francisco das Furnas in 1697.
He was born in Madeira and was a canon of Funchal Cathedral (the Sé) (Sé do Funchal), vicar general and governor of this diocese. At the end of the 16th century and the beginning of the 17th he enjoyed the reputation of one of the most notable preachers of his time.
In the parish (freguesia) of São Pedro, on the Caminho de Santo António, there stood the chapel of São Francisco, better known as São Francisco das Furnas (St Francis of Assisi). It was founded by Canon Pedro Correia Barbosa in 1697. It belonged to the entail (morgado) of Jervis de Atouguia. In the house adjoining it the Viscount of Atouguia (see that entry) was born on 7 July 1797.
