Original title: Nossa Senhora da Esperança (Capela de)

Two chapels of Our Lady of Hope: one founded in 1744 by Father Manuel de Nóbrega at Vale Formoso, Santa Luzia, since demolished, and an old pilgrimage chapel in São Roque.

Map: Madeira (4)

In 1744 Father Manuel de Nóbrega founded a chapel dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Esperança at the locality (sítio) of Vale Formoso (‘beautiful valley’), in the parish (freguesia) of Santa Luzia (‘St Lucy’); the deed of endowment is dated 11 December of the same year. The chapel was demolished many years ago.

There was a chapel with the same dedication in the parish of São Roque (‘St Roch’). It was very old and was the focus of an ancient pilgrimage. Lieutenant-Colonel A. Artur Sarmento published a detailed historical account of this chapel in a pamphlet.
