Abroad
The parish cemeteries of Santa Cruz (‘Holy Cross’) and Câmara de Lobos (‘seals’ den’), and the Angústias (‘sorrows’) cemetery in Funchal (now closed), each have their own chapel for the religious services held there, all dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows (Nossa Senhora das Dores). The first was built in the last quarter of the 19th century and the last in 1844.
The chapel of the Princess Maria Amélia Hospice (Hospício da Princesa Dona Maria Amélia), which serves the patients cared for there, is also dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows. Its exquisite image was given by the ill-fated Prince Maximilian, later Emperor of Mexico, who was barbarously shot there in 1867.
