Our Lady of the Flight into Egypt (chapel)
Original title: Nossa Senhora do Desterro (Capela de)
Describes three chapels dedicated to Our Lady of Exile: one founded in the early 17th century by Canon Jorge Furtado de Sousa at the Desterro site, one in Arco da Calheta now in ruins, and one at Machico founded in 1661.
At the locality (sítio) that now bears this name, Canon Jorge Furtado de Sousa founded a chapel with the same dedication in the first quarter of the 17th century. Its present owner is the distinguished Madeiran Dr Juvenal Henriques de Araújo. It is often visited by people from various parts of the island, and in 1942 an interesting historical monograph about it was published.
In the last quarter of the 17th century, Raul Esteves had a chapel dedicated to Our Lady of the Flight into Egypt (Nossa Senhora do Desterro) built at the locality of Ledo, in the parish (freguesia) of Arco da Calheta (‘arc of Calheta’). Only a few ruins of it remain.
There was also a chapel with the same dedication at the locality of Ribeira Grande, in the parish of Machico, founded in 1661 by Captain Manuel Telo de Meneses.
