Lombo das Mercês

A locality within the populated sítio of Florenças in the parish of Arco da Calheta, named after the entailed chapel of Nossa Senhora das Mercês founded in 1650. A chapel to Santa Maria Madalena is also said to have been built there in 1684.

A locality (sítio) incorporated into the inhabited locality of Florenças, in the parish (freguesia) of Arco da Calheta (‘arc of Calheta’). It took its name from the chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Ransom (Nossa Senhora das Mercês), founded in 1650 by Gaspar Homem de El-Rei and his wife Dona Isabel Florença, which was an entailed foundation (instituição vincular, a morgado or capela). It is also stated that João Portes Homem built a chapel dedicated to Santa Maria Madalena (St Mary Magdalene) in this locality in 1684.
