Our Lady of the Good Voyage (chapels)
Original title: Nossa Senhora da Boa Viagem (Capelas de)
Describes two chapels dedicated to Our Lady of Good Voyage: one founded in 1711 at Carne Azeda in Santa Luzia, and an ancient one in Santa Maria Maior, Funchal, founded by Bento da Veiga, whose adjoining house reputedly held the first customs house.
In the locality (sítio) of Carne Azeda (‘sour meat’), in the parish (freguesia) of Santa Luzia (‘St Lucy’), Manuel Pestana Teixeira and his wife Francisca Xavier da Conceição founded a chapel of this dedication in 1711; it was inspected for the celebration of acts of worship on 28 June of the same year. In the parish of Santa Maria Maior (‘St Mary Major’), in the street that still bears the name of Boa Viagem, stood a chapel of the same dedication, founded by Bento da Veiga. We do not know the date of its foundation, but we know that it was a very old building. We have read somewhere that it was a building of interesting and characteristic construction, as was a house adjoining it. It is said that the first customs house, and later the first public butcher’s shop (açougue) of the municipality (concelho), were installed in this house. The deconsecrated chapel that stands today in Rua da Boa Viagem is not the chapel of this dedication to which we refer here.
