Hospital Velho (street)
Original title: Hospital Velho (Rua do)
One of Funchal's oldest streets, running from the Praça dos Lavradores, named after the Santa Isabel hospital that long stood there; it was formerly called Rua de Diogo Afonso and Rua de Santo António.
The street runs from the Praça dos Lavradores until it meets the southern end of Rua da Rochinha and the Travessa do Arcipreste. It is one of the oldest streets in Funchal and was once called Diogo Afonso. Its name comes from the fact that the Hospital of St Elizabeth of Portugal (Santa Isabel) stood in it for many years, before it moved to the building it occupies at present. Later it was also called Rua de Santo António, a name many people still use today, because a chapel with that dedication was built there; its ruins lie on the south side of the street. Next to the hospital stood the old parish church of the parish (freguesia) of Santa Maria Maior (‘St Mary Major’).
