Ribeirinho (alley)

Original title: Ribeirinho (Beco do)

A Funchal alley linking the Travessa do Rego and Travessa da Conveniência; in 1902 the council allowed part of it to be closed off.

Map: Madeira (6)

This alley links the Travessa do Rêgo with the Travessa da Conveniência, near the Avenida de João de Deus. It was once longer than it is today: at a council meeting on 12 June 1902 the owner of the quinta (country estate) das Rosas was permitted to close it off next to the Travessa da Conveniência, on condition, however, that he give the levadeiro (levada keeper who maintains the channel and distributes the water) of the Levada das Hortas, for the upkeep of the levada (irrigation channel), a key to the door that closes the entrance to the alley on the side of the said avenue.

Chronology
  • Funchal council allowed the owner of Quinta das Rosas to gate the Beco do Ribeirinho, provided the levada keeper received a key.
