The earliest known chapel of Our Lady of Jesus, founded in São Martinho in 1656 by João Bettencourt de Atouguia.
‘The first chapel dedicated to Nossa Senhora de Jesus that we have found’, says Dr Álvaro de Azevedo, ‘is the one founded by João Bettencourt de Atouguia in the parish (freguesia) of São Martinho (‘St Martin’), in 1656.’
