Ribeirinho (street)

Original title: Ribeirinho (Rua do)

Former Funchal street, later Rua das Hortas and now Rua do Alferes Veiga Pestana, named after the Vale brook.

Map: Madeira (7)

It ran from the eastern part of the Avenida Elias Garcia to the Rua do Carmo (‘Carmel’), or Rua do Dr. Costa Ferreira. Today it is called Rua do Alferes Veiga Pestana, and before it received this name it was called Rua das Hortas (see that entry).

The small brook that gave the street its name is the Ribeiro do Vale, which comes down from Pena (‘crag’) and passes along the Avenida de João de Deus and the Rua do Carmo. In the latter street, next to the Travessa do Rego, there was a bridge that formed a large hump in the ground; it was lowered in 1906.

Chronology
  • The raised bridge in Rua do Carmo by the Travessa do Rego in Funchal was lowered.
