Our Lady of the Incarnation (chapel)

Original title: Nossa Senhora da Incarnação (Capela de)

Two chapels of Our Lady of the Incarnation: a vanished one at Louros, São Gonçalo (1656), and one of 1671 in Estreito de Câmara de Lobos.

Map: Madeira (4)

According to the annotator of the Saudades, there was a chapel with this dedication at the locality (sítio) of Louros (‘laurels’), in the parish (freguesia) of São Gonçalo (‘St Gonçalo’), founded by Diogo Bernardes Branco in 1656.

In the south of the parish of Estreito de Câmara de Lobos (‘the narrows of Câmara de Lobos’), on the boundary with the parish of Câmara de Lobos (‘seals’ den’), stands the chapel of Nossa Senhora da Incarnação. The date 1671 over its portico must be that of its construction. It belonged to the holder of the entail (morgado) João José de Ornelas Cabral and is now the property of Dona Maria Teresa Figueira. See Convent of the Incarnation (1-306).

Chronology
  • Diogo Bernardes Branco built the chapel of Nossa Senhora da Incarnação at Louros.
  • The chapel of Nossa Senhora da Incarnação at Estreito de Câmara de Lobos was probably built, as dated over its portal.
