Babosas

Babosas is a locality in Monte parish with a small square and viewpoint over the Curral dos Romeiros. It has been known as Conceição since a chapel was built there in 1906.

A locality in the parish (freguesia) of Monte (‘hill’), with a small square or viewpoint that has been called Conceição since 1906, when a chapel dedicated to Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception (Nossa Senhora da Conceição) was built there. It is a much-frequented spot (lugar (settlement ranking between a town and a parish)), and from it there is a fine view over the picturesque locality of Curral dos Romeiros (‘pilgrims’ fold’).

Chronology
  • The Chapel-Monument of Our Lady of the Conception was built at Babosas, Monte, commemorating the fiftieth anniversary of the dogma of the Immaculate Conception; the site thereafter became known as Conceição.
