Badajeira

Badajeira is a shoal south-east of the Ilhéu de Fora, off the Ponta de São Lourenço. The steamers Forerunner (1854) and Newton (1881) were wrecked there in calm seas.

A shoal south-east of the Ilhéu de Fora (a short distance from the Ponta de São Lourenço), where the steamer Forerunner was wrecked in October 1854 and the steamer Newton on 12 April 1881. Both wrecks occurred while the sea was calm, and a great number of people perished in the first.

Chronology
  • The British steamer Forerunner was wrecked on the Badajeira shoal off Ponta de São Lourenço, killing three passengers and eleven crew.
  • The steamer Newton was wrecked on the Badajeira shoal.
