São Roque de Machico (fort)
Original title: Forte de S. Roque de Machico
A fort built during the Philippine period at the mouth of the Ribeirinho in Machico bay, of which only wall fragments remain.
Built under Philippine rule (Spanish Habsburg rule over Portugal, 1580–1640), at the mouth of the Ribeirinho (‘little brook’) inside Machico bay. It stood beside the São Roque parade ground. In 1695 its master gunner (condestável) was Pedro de Sousa Maciel. Only a few blocks of its walls remain on the beach.
