Badejo (Epinephelus ruber)

The badejo is a grouper rarely caught in Madeiran waters. It lives on rocky bottoms down to about 150 fathoms and is taken on hook gear.

A fish of the family Percidae, seldom caught in Madeiran waters. It lives on rocky bottoms between the coast and a depth of about 150 braças (fathoms). It does not migrate, and its young have been found near the coast in shallow water. It is taken on hook gear, with the briqueira (a Madeiran hand line for bottom fishing) and the gorazeira (deep-water longline for sea bream). Although its flavour is not especially delicate, the less demanding palates do not consider it unpleasant.
