Baião

An old noble family name of the archipelago, especially on Porto Santo, now almost extinct; the family held an entailed estate there and a chapel in the parish church.

This is an old family surname in the archipelago, particularly on the island of Porto Santo (‘holy harbour’), although it is almost extinct today. Belchior Baião, of noble lineage, was the first of this name to settle in Madeira. The family held an entailed estate (morgadio) on Porto Santo and was patron of a chapel in the parish church that is still known at present as the Capela da Morgada. Until a few years ago this chapel kept the characteristic stamp of Manueline buildings, and it was certainly the only part of the parish church that remained from the original construction.
