Conceição (square)
Original title: Conceição (Largo da)
A square in Funchal, commonly called Largo das Babosas, named after the Capela-Monumento of the Conceição built in 1906 to mark the dogma's fiftieth anniversary.
It is commonly called Largo das Babosas (‘aloe square’). Its new name comes from the chapel of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception (Nossa Senhora da Conceição) built there in 1906, intended specifically to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the definition of the dogma of the Immaculate Conception, and which came to be known as the Capela-Monumento. The building of this chapel is due chiefly to Commander Luís Betencourt Miranda, secretary of the Municipal Council (Câmara Municipal) of Funchal. From this square there is a striking view over the Ribeira de João Gomes (‘João Gomes’s stream’) and Curral dos Romeiros (‘pilgrims’ fold’).
