Ponte Nova (street)

Original title: Ponte Nova (Rua da)

Funchal street running from the left bank of the Ribeira de Santa Luzia to the Calçada da Incarnação, formerly extending to Rua dos Ferreiros.

Map: Madeira (6)

The present street of this name links the left bank of the Ribeira de Santa Luzia (‘St Lucy’s stream’) with the Calçada da Incarnação, but the old street extended as far as Rua dos Ferreiros (‘blacksmiths’), thus taking in part of the present Rua dos Netos. This part of the street was opened in 1833.

The works on the so-called Ponte Nova (New Bridge) over the Ribeira de Santa Luzia were contracted out for 890$00 réis (old Portuguese money of account; 1$000 = 1,000 réis, 1:000$000 = one conto = 1,000,000 réis) at a session of the Municipal Council on 25 May 1768.

Chronology
  • The Funchal council contracted the building of the Ponte Nova over the Ribeira de Santa Luzia for 890$000 réis.
  • The section of Rua da Ponte Nova towards Rua dos Ferreiros was opened in Funchal.
