Netos (street)

Original title: Netos (Rua dos)

A Funchal street running from Rua de São Pedro to the Ponte Nova over the Santa Luzia stream, named after the settler João Rodrigues Neto Calassa.

Map: Madeira (6)

It runs from Rua de São Pedro to the Ponte Nova (‘new bridge’) over the Ribeira de Santa Luzia (‘St Lucy’). Formerly, however, it ended at Rua dos Ferreiros (‘blacksmiths’), today Rua do Comércio, and the stretch bounded on the east by the said Ribeira de Santa Luzia was included in Rua da Ponte Nova.

This street was named after João Rodrigues Neto Calassa, who came from mainland Portugal, settled on this island and died here in 1531, having lived in the street that bears his name.
