Origin of the Neto family surname in Madeira, descending from João Rodrigues Neto, who gave his name to the Rua dos Netos in Funchal.
This family surname derives from João Rodrigues Neto, who lived in a street that he had opened for the passage of the Corpus Christi procession and which, from his surname, came to be called Rua dos Netos. He held a sesmaria (royal land grant to settlers on condition of cultivation) in São Martinho and was the son of Rodrigo Álvaro Neto, a fidalgo (nobleman of the lesser nobility) of Salamanca.
