Rodrigues
Genealogical note on the several distinct origins of Madeiran families bearing the surname Rodrigues.
Those who bear this family surname descend from various lines: some from Mem Rodrigues de Vasconcelos, who married a daughter of Bartolomeu Perestrelo; others from Garcia Rodrigues da Câmara, father of Aldonça Delgado, wife of the 3rd donatary (donatário) of Porto Santo (‘holy harbour’), who murdered her; others from João Rodrigues, who lived in the 16th century and held a settled estate (fazenda povoada) near Calheta (‘small cove’); and others, finally, from João Rodrigues Neto, who died in 1531, held a sesmaria (royal land grant to settlers on condition of cultivation) in São Martinho and died in the street called Rua dos Netos, in the parish (freguesia) of São Pedro.
