Príncipe (street)

Original title: Príncipe (Rua do)

Former name of the Funchal street running alongside the Ribeira de Santa Luzia, from the Calçada do Cidrão to the Rua dos Netos, renamed Rua 5 de Outubro after the Republic was proclaimed. The name probably honoured the Prince Regent D. João VI, though no municipal record confirms it.

Before the Republic was proclaimed on this island, this was the name of the street that runs alongside the Ribeira de Santa Luzia (‘St Lucy’s stream’) and extends from the paved lane of Cidrão, or of João Sabino da Costa, to the Rua dos Netos. Today it is called Rua 5 de Outubro. We believe that the name was intended to honour the Prince Regent John VI, but we have never found any indication of this in the records of the Municipal Council (Câmara Municipal) of this city.
