St Christopher (chapels)
Original title: São Cristóvão (Capelas)
Two chapels of São Cristóvão: one in Machico built 1692 under a 1690 will, and an older one in Ponta Delgada (now Boaventura), demolished in 1748.
Abroad
This chapel, in the parish (freguesia) of Machico, in the locality (sítio) that took its name from it, was built under a testamentary provision made in 1690 by Cristóvão Moniz de Meneses, ordering its construction. The date 1692 is carved on its portico.
In the parish of Ponta Delgada (‘slender point’), on land that today belongs to the parish of Boaventura (‘good fortune’), stood the chapel of São Cristóvão (‘St Christopher’). It was an old building, for the parish archive of the first of those parishes records that it was already in a poor state of repair in 1578, when Dona Maria de Leme was its administrator. It underwent various repairs and was demolished in 1748. It gave its name to the locality in which it had been built.
