Princesa (street)

Original title: Princesa (Rua da)

Former name, used until the proclamation of the Republic in 1910, of the Funchal street on the left bank of the Ribeira de Santa Luzia, now Rua 31 de Janeiro. The name apparently honoured Princess Carlota Joaquina; locals also called it Rua das Árvores for its plane trees.

This was the name, before the proclamation of the Republic, of the street on the left bank of the Ribeira de Santa Luzia (‘St Lucy’s stream’) that is known today as Rua 31 de Janeiro (‘31 January street’). It seems that it was Princess Carlota Joaquina, wife of Prince Dom João, later John VI, whom the Municipal Council (Câmara Municipal) wished to honour when it gave that thoroughfare the name it kept until 1910. Local people used to call Rua 31 de Janeiro the Rua das Árvores (street of the trees), because of the lovely plane trees planted along it.
