Cold store
Original title: Frigorifico
The cold store planned by the Junta Agrícola in Funchal, built at considerable cost but never put into operation and abandoned in 1918.
The now defunct Agricultural Board (Junta Agrícola) sought to establish a cold store in Funchal, and for this purpose bought a plot of land between the former Rua da Conceição (‘Conception’) and Rua das Hortas, today Rua Correia Heredia and Rua do Alferes Veiga Pestana, for the sum of 10,500.00 escudos. The machinery for the establishment cost 6,000.00 escudos, and by 1915 about 5,000.00 escudos had been spent on installations, walls, opening the connection between the two streets mentioned, etc.
Although the cold store was an establishment capable of rendering good service, it never went into operation, and at a meeting of the Agricultural Board on 23 August 1918 it was resolved to hand over to the Municipal Council (Câmara Municipal) the street on which the buildings intended for it had been constructed. (1921).
