Our Lady of the Peña de Francia (fort)

An outwork built in 1712 to defend the Ribeiro Seco cove in Funchal, where British troops were quartered in 1801.
It was an outwork defending the cove of Ribeiro Seco (‘dry brook’), built in 1712; its 1st master gunner was Manuel de Ceia. In 1801 part of the British troops under Colonel Clinton were quartered there.
