Loures (fort)

Original title: Forte de Loures

A 17th-century fort, traditionally built by a private individual, covering the Gonçalo Aires cove; Captain-General D. Diogo Coutinho wanted to put a silk factory there.

Map: Madeira (2)

Tradition has it that the fort was built by a private individual in the 17th century. It covered the cove of Gonçalo Aires and the mouth of the stream. By the time of the captain-general (capitão-general, military governor of Madeira) Dom Diogo Coutinho it had lost its importance, and he intended to set up a silk factory there.
