The road lies in the parishes of Santa Maria Maior (‘St Mary Major’) and São Gonçalo and continues the Calçada do Socorro (‘succour’), bounding the grounds of the Gonçalo Aires lazaretto on the north. The lane that runs into this road, to the east of the Ribeiro do Pasto (‘pasture’), is known as the Travessa do Lazareto (‘quarantine hospital’). On the southern edge of the Caminho do Lazareto, overlooking the sea, stands the Jewish cemetery. Its entrance still bears an inscription in Hebrew meaning ‘Dwelling of Life’ and the date 5,611, which corresponds to the year 1851 of our era.
