Leal
An old Madeiran family surname, chiefly associated with Porto da Cruz, whose members founded chapels in the 17th and 18th centuries.
Leal is an old family surname, found chiefly in Porto da Cruz (‘harbour of the cross’). António de Almada married Isabel Rodrigues Leal, of this parish (freguesia), around the middle of the 16th century. In 1684 Maria de Aguiar, widow of Gonçalo de Faria Leal, founded the chantry (capela) of Our Lady of Succour (Nossa Senhora do Socorro) in Estreito de Câmara de Lobos (‘the narrows of Câmara de Lobos’). A member of this family, João Nepomuceno de Freitas Leal, founded in 1770 a chapel dedicated to St John Nepomucene in the locality (sítio) of Lombo dos Leais (‘the Leals’ ridge’), in the aforementioned parish of Porto da Cruz.
