Penha de França (battery)

Original title: Penha de França (Bataria da)

A former Funchal battery near the Penha de França chapel, probably built under Philippine rule, occupied by British troops and ceded to the council in 1902.

Map: Madeira (2)

It stood near the chapel of the same name, the chapel of Penha de França (Our Lady of the Rock of France), and was definitively ceded to the Municipal Council by a deed signed in April 1902. It was apparently a fortification ordered to be built during the period of Philippine rule. It was occupied by British troops, and it is said somewhere that an English soldier was executed near it, as we have already mentioned on p. 427 of vol. I of this work. A serious affront was thus committed against the sovereignty of our country, despite the protests of the local authorities.

Chronology
  • The Penha de França battery was definitively ceded to the municipal council by deed.
